Kaspersky Internet Security review

PC Magazine

Parental control is brand-new in this version of the suite, and its newness shows. On the plus side, it does offer multiple configuration profiles you can associate with specific Windows user accounts. By default, all users fall under the Child profile except those explicitly assigned to the Parent (no filtering) profile. You can also enable a Teenager profile and manually configure it for less-stringent filtering. The help system explains in detail how to create a custom profile—but this feature is not actually present in the program.

KIS7 filters Internet access at the network level, so it's browser-independent. A child won't have access to sites categorized as Porn, Drugs, Violence, Explicit language, Weapons, or Gambling. You can optionally limit access to chat sites and Web-based e-mail as well. The filter relies both on a database of known URLs and on real-time examination of Web page content. Blocked pages are replaced by a stark message stating "The requested URL . . . is forbidden." Additionally, each attempt is logged, along with all URLs that are not blocked.

Like most parental-control systems, KIS7 lets you set limits on children's Internet use. You can specify a daily maximum, and you can also define a schedule of times during which the Internet is available. Whereas most products offer a handy visual grid to schedule Internet access on a weekly basis, KIS7 makes you enter each time interval manually and uses the same schedule for every day of the week. If the time limit expires or the scheduled "on" time ends, there's no warning. Internet access just cuts off, and any further connection attempts get the exact same warning that's displayed when the child tries to access a forbidden site. That's confusing; overall, the Parental Control UI needs a lot more work, in my opinion.

Concerned about privacy? Here's a worry. When Parental Control is turned on, every URL visited by every user, regardless of that user's profile, is logged. You can't suppress logging for specific users or profiles, and you can't delete individual log items without clearing the entire log. If you value your online privacy, you'll want to clear it frequently or leave the Parental Control option turned off.

KIS7 spam filtering and parental control are no great shakes. On the other hand, the suite has real power in the areas most essential for security—firewall, antivirus, and antispyware. But you won't get full protection using the default settings; you absolutely must raise the protection level in a dozen-odd areas. So although KIS7 is a capable suite, it's not yet a particularly convenient one.

I don't mind tweaking the settings; I get paid to dig into the guts of apps like this. But people who pay for security suites may be less willing to roll up their sleeves to configure it. Still, it's a decent suite, and it wouldn't take much for Kaspersky to fix the configuration problem. I'll be interested to see how the next version stacks up if Kaspersky takes my recommendations to heart—and once it's had more time to tweak the brand-new parental-control module.

Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 beta version

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the release of a beta version of Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 is a product that protects mail servers running Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. The product scans incoming and outgoing messages for malicious code. Backup copies of objects are saved in a special storage area prior to treatment or deletion, ruling out the loss of information. The sender, recipient and IT security system administrator can be notified of any messages that include malicious objects.

Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 detects virus outbreaks and automatically takes emergency measures, at the same time notifying the system administrator of the outbreak. The product can also re-scan messages which have been scanned before in order to detect viruses that could not be detected during earlier scans. Such scanning is performed in the background and does not significantly affect the mail server’s performance.

The application’s parameters can be configured depending on the type and volume of mail traffic and the hardware characteristics, such as the amount of RAM, system performance, number of processors etc. Signature databases for Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 can be updated automatically or manually, from Kaspersky Lab FTP or HTTP update servers or from local network resources containing current updates.

Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 provides system administrators with a powerful and functional management console that can be used to configure and manage the server part of the product. The management module is implemented as a Microsoft Management Console snap-in.

The beta version of Kaspersky Security 6.0 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 can be downloaded from ftp://downloads1.kaspersky-labs.com/beta/ksexchange. The product’s description is available at http://www.kaspersky.com/beta?product=190809664.

PC Tools Registry Mechanic Product Review

PC Tools Registry Mechanic Product Review

What It Does
Makes your computer run faster by cleaning and compressing your registry.

Who Needs It
* Use if you frequently install and uninstall software
* Use if you've been using the same computer for a year or more
* Use if you've recently removed a lot of spyware

The Windows Registry is a database containing important configuration settings and is an integral part of your computer. It is used heavily by the operating system and by virtually every program that you may run on your PC.

Whenever you install a new program, entries are created in the registry, and as it gets larger your computer becomes slower. Invalid registry entries that are left behind due to software malfunction, spyware infection, or removal of programs are a common cause of computer slowdown and fatal Windows crashes. Windows updates and updates from your computer manufacturer also tend to create and delete registry entries all the time.

PC Tools Registry Mechanic is a utility designed by PC Tools that's intended to keep your registry in the same optimal condition it was when you first started using it. Not only does it identify and remove invalid entries, it also compresses your registry making it (and your whole computer) faster.

Usability

We found PC Tools Registry Mechanic to be easy to use. There are three options you can select (and you should select all of them). The first performs a deep scan on your registry to identify and fix problems. The second makes changes to registry settings to make your computer run faster. The third compresses and optimizes the registry to make it run faster.

Running all three options on a PC takes less than five minutes and should be done regularly (probably about once a month).

PC Tools Registry Mechanic checks the entire registry, not just portions of it.

Effectiveness

We decided to test PC Tools Registry Mechanic on two PCs. The first was a low-use desktop PC less than a month old. The second is a kid's high-use gaming laptop that frequently has games and toolbars installed and uninstalled on it. We took measurements on both PCs, installed and ran PC Tools Registry Mechanic, and then remeasured the difference.

In our first test, we measured the Windows startup time. On the new desktop computer, startup time decreased from 57 to 49 seconds, a savings of 8 seconds or 14%. On the second high-use laptop, startup time decreased from 41 to 31 seconds, or a 25% improvement. PC Tools Registry Mechanic definitely had an effect.

We then used a tool called Sisoft Sandra to benchmark both machines. This tool measures CPU, memory, network, and file system utilization and is a good overall measure of how well the operating system and hardware are working. On the newer desktop, the Sisoft Sandra benchmarks didn't change much at all - there was a slight improvement, but not enough where one could tell the difference in normal, everyday use.

On the gaming laptop however, the difference was amazing. Three of the four Sisoft Sandra benchmarks increased by over 80%! The computer was noticably faster and more responsive. Here are the before and after benchmarks:

BEFOREAFTERCHANGE
CPU Arithmetic 4373
Multimedia: 14139
Memory: 2297
File System: 24501
CPU Arithmetic 8247
Multimedia: 27428
Memory: 4160
File System: 24589

Other Features

PC Tools Registry Mechanic 5.2 has a number of minor features, but a few stand out. For instance, it will look for and remove file fragments temporary files (*.tmp and *.chk) often left over from installation and windows disk recovery operations. And it also defragments the windows boot file and sorts and refreshes the Windows Start Menu items list. All of these features help help to increase the speed at which Windows starts up and runs.

Summary

The Windows registry is an essential part of your operating system that must be kept in good condition for your computer to run optimally. PC Tools Registry Mechanic 5.1 is an effective tool that will improve performance of older and heavily-used PCs, sometimes dramatically. Highly recommended.
